It's not just about the technique. Several books mentioned here but also links to PDFs. I'd like to work my way through this during 2010.

"Beaurocrats drive the medium to banality". Seth Godin shares a quick peek at how the Web will likely evolve, based on past experience.
The venerable Bryan Eisenberg's having a free webinar tomorrow at noon - free always works for me - where he'll discuss the 21 Secrets of Top Converting Websites. Bryan's a tremendous source of information on conversions, so if you're smart, and you have time... sign up. I believe you'll see me there (virtually, natch).

In a recent Alertbox, Neilsen writes: "Even though it's a bad course title, it's a good overall mnemonic to design for cavemen and their literal-minded and limited-capacity brains. After all, your paying customers are only one step out of the cave." So often, designers and web business people are horrified by the idea of designing for the lowest common denominator, feeling that it's an insult to their clients. I've just NEVER seen it that way; instead, I've always looked at it as nothing short of a miracle that, in this online world of constantly shifting interface rules, that we manage to communicate at all... why make it harder on the user if you don't have to?

Most interesting part of this post, to me, are the questions it asks. Particularly this one: "Does a Twitter link imply that you're social-media savvy...that you're happy to engage in online conversations with your readers? Are you? How does that look if your sender address is do-not-reply@?" Exactly. WHY do companies still insist on sending emails with do-not-reply addresses in the From/Reply-To field? I've never understood this. As a company you want to invite dialogue, not avoid it.
The main content for this is unsurprising to me, having teenagers in the house - web ads viewed for "branding" purposes have limited to no value or impact on the under-40 set (and I'd bet even lower value for those who grew up with the Web). The point I found heartening was the bit directly from Yahoo itself: that 78% of the effect in sales comes from those who view ads but don't click them. This certainly follows what I have anecdotally noticed with ads I've both sold and run.

Want. Wonder if you can get the inside black instead of brown. Would so fit the new Parisian b&w thing I'm doing in the master bedroom this year...
