The, hands down, perfect tee for my fiance. I totally have to get this.

One of my fave cookbook authors (Bittman) explains how he managed to create an "unplug" day for himself once a week.. how hard it was, and what he learned along the way. I totally need to do this. I have no idea how I'd do it though - unplugged, completely? No phones, no screens, for an entire day? What did people do before there was technology anyway? Would radio be cheating? What about Internet radio (since I don't listen to the regular kind any more...)?

Here's the thing about sales: everybody's trying to sell somebody something sometime. Even if your job isn't directly sales, odds are these are invaluable ideas you could incorporate into your daily life.
You know that thing you see everywhere - when you click on an image, the image enlarges over top of the existing page, blacking out the rest of the page? This is the thing that does it. Mostly bookmarked for my own reference. One of the most ubiquitous (so probably clichéd) and yet useful little scripts I've ever seen.

Paste in programming code: C's, Perl, Python, Ruby, other stuff - and it can not only "run" it but will create a permalink to that snippet of code so you can refer to it later/send it to your mom/contact the aliens with it. Since I know none of these languages it's beyond useless for me, but hey, I might still have a geeky reader or two out there.
Illustrator tips, tricks and tutorials. Sweet and lovely design. I need to learn how to use Illustrator. Surely after all these years in Photoshop it shouldn't be that hard.

Absolutely adorable illustrations, incredible pattern designs, and oh my I want one of those toys. Sweet.

Brief interview and interesting process and post-production breakdown of one of my favorite photographers. Yeah, I know it's a no-brainer, I know he's a rock star, but I love his stuff. Haunting and weird and fantastic.

Absolutely gorgeous. Love, love, love the keyboard.
Nice basic overview of cross processing in Photoshop. The tutorial reads "for CS3" but it would be fine with most versions - it's strictly curves adustment layers.
Basically, a sketch of my fiance's early years. :) I love, love love that if you say NO to D&D exposure you go to sunlight and then directly to Girls. Yees. *laughs*
Really cool little UX widget/helper. Hard to describe, so boot yourself on over there if you're a UX/web designer. Mac only, darnit.
"If your start-up can only succeed by being a sweatshop, your idea is simply not good enough. Go back to the drawing board and come up with something better that can be implemented by whole people, not cogs.". Perfectly put. Go read the whole thing and then send it to twelve people you know.

Gorgeous lineup. Burbank is just awesome, ditto Urbana. BistroScript is so retro and fabulous it makes me smile just to see it. if you like type (and hey, doesn't everyone?) head on over and check out the pretty pretty type.
Gorgeous - set up like a file folder, four tabbed polypropylene boards are stacked upright and avoid cross-contamination. Plus, poly's dishwasher safe, so you can keep the germies away. This is just soooo pretty.
Interesting change - most I'd spoken to (I haven't used Yahoo's PPC myself) had said the same as the folks in the comments - they used Yahoo because of the fixed minimum bid price. Will be interesting to see how this shakes out not just for advertisers but for the future of Yahoo's PPC in general.

Brilliant marketing/new media/new way of thinking about the music industry: musicmaker/songwriter Jill Sobule runs a pledge drive - with different goodies for each level of donation - to raise money for her next CD. Brilliant both as a way to raise funds but also from a marketing perspective: gets her press now, and gets her very motivated groupies when the album comes out. Really, really, smart.

Google's planning on penalizing advertisers using their AdWords system if they have a slow-loading web page. Quick-loading web pages will go to the front of the AdWords line. True, this might help customers - making them more likely to click ads - but paid advertising is supposed to be a little more democratic than that, yes? Not everyone can afford incredible, load-savvy web designers and dedicated hosts. I can't see how this won't backlash on them from the small businesses who make up such a huge chunk of their customer base.
You already know - just by the title - that if you click through and read it you're going to be holding your head by the end, but it's like a traffic accident: you can't not look, can you? It's a good litlte rant on Techdirt about Eisner and his (apparent) love for fugging up the history of copyright by insisting that President Lincoln introduced a great deal of copyright into American history. Sigh.
Absolutely hilarious new blog pointing out some scary indeed Photoshop work - I don't know what made me laugh harder, the iStockPhoto watermark on the Nintendo DS cover? The nipple-less model? Nope, it's gotta be the three hands. Love the Spiderman reference in the tagline. via NoahBrier.com
Of particular interest since I just managed to unearth my parents' Polaroid Sun 640 instant camera and have been looking forward to experimenting. There's lots of suggestions here on how to help let Polaroid know you still *heart* their film and puh-leeeze sell their technology to someone else so we can keep taking cool photos.
Amazing shots, haunting and simple. Over-the-top love for her Why I Am Marrying Him and Irish Grandmother series of photos. via Heather Morton

Love her stuff - especially the Bound and Housekeeping Made Easy series, brilliant. via Heather Morton

Seems like a really good pro-quality Flash based slideshow.

Probably no question on the top five, but beyond that there's perhaps some wiggling room... one thing about lists like this is there's always room for one more in the RSS feed - you might just find a gem. :)

I totally have to buy this t-shirt. Because if I ever have to go to an interview again in my life, this is the tee I want to wear to that interview. Come on. Any potential employer that gets this tee is right for me. From the brilliant folks at TShirtHell (you gotta love the name of the new site - TorsoPants - hee).
You, too, can be stalked for a day: "MethodIzaz is a unique photography experience. Subjects are unaware of the exact moment they will be photographed and of the photographer's identity. Instead, the subject is photographed completely naturally, living life as normal." I can't decide if this is cool or creepy. :)
Do I even have to say anything more than that? Pink and green. Makes me want to learn backgammon.
Some official, some lookalikes. Really helpful if you're trying to do tie-in promotions.
While aimed at photographers and other creatives, here's something we can benefit from applying. Part of Leslie Burns' Manuals series.
Pogue's review of the Flip video recorder, which I've been mildly interested in until the review, and which I now rampantly want with all the girl-geek wannabe director inside me. Gosh I love Pogue. If you don't gets you some Pogue every week in your inbox, you're missing out. I highly recommend signing up.

"Enterprise-level" IT sometimes has to think outside of the enterprise. Is what they're saying. Frankly I just wish we could abolish the word enterprise - it almost always means complexity, high cost, long delays, and "ideal scenario" thinking in the minds of IT planners. Geesh.
Is [insert web site here] down for everyone or just you? Find out here. Funny. I plan to send this to everyone who emails me with this question! Via Signals vs. Noise

Some good tips here, some common stuff like headline crafting (without the exact tips to make a good headline, but I digress) but also some good suggestions for the pre-header that are worth considering.
"Previous recessions have provided big opportunities -- spawning the brand-management system, soap operas, modern cable networks, airline loyalty programs, the IBM personal computer, the iPod, Crest Whitestrips, Axe body spray..." I love marketing.
Why, for the love of chocolate and vodka and everything else that's wonderful in this world, would you send a business email to customers using an @donotreply.com email address? I mean, sure: donotreply@yourcompanysdamndomainname.com makes sense if you have no desire to read replies. (Why don't you want to read replies? Why is it OK for customers be contacted by you via email but not OK for them to reply? But I digress.) But seriously: internal emails, customer emails, important business crap, don't you realize someone probably owns that domain name? Well, they do.
March 26, 2008
A fabulous sound introduction to the steps you need to take other than designing the email. Truly, there's a lot more to it than people think. I love Digital Web Magazine. Brilliant and useful stuff for web workers.
If you want people to like you, first decide who needs to hate you. In other words, BE something. Be something personally, be something in business, make your mark, stand out, and deal with the fact that doing this will mean some folks hate you. You should see some of the crap I get via email from Pampered Puppy's hate group (though I don't think they've actually formed a group - yet). Don't care. My site's not for them. This is why the God of Email invented the Trash folder.

Well that's just cool and overdue and possibly cool again. Photoshop for the Web - free, and presumably limited features, which I'll check out later today, but also including galleries and 2GB of storage. Did I mention free? Cool.
Yes, yes, yes - Dane has invited a smart guest contributor indeed. Common sense is, in my opinion, the best business tool you can have. And the most important.
It's not even just about photo editing, but magazines in general. Rob's hit it right on the nail about what magazines do best... and why they should focus on that, rather than repurposing, repackaging or trying to be a web site.
Really amazing photography. His portraits leave me breathless. Definitely worth checking out.
Not that this is entirely a surprise, but it is a little frightening all the same. Hopefully this report will put pressure on the biggest offenders of "Report Spam" buttons - Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail and their ilk - to make the buttons more clear. Clarity is important. Didn't you pay attention to those commercials?

A completely see through pinball machine, custom built. Looks vaguely steampunk to me for some reason, but it's also waaay cool. I loves me some pinball. I'm old school like that.
From pets (!!) to lunch hours to distractibility (hence, this blog), it's not always easy to get work done at home. A good primer for those cube workers still dreaming of a home workday. But I'll tell you this: I'd hate to give it up, now that I have it.

Fabulous. What a great way to get the feel and utility of old cameras without paying for film processing, which I still can't get over how expensive sheesh. :)
