disclaimer: I don't read comic books
posted 2005.05.29
It's true - I haven't read a comic book in years, not since I was really, really little and I'm pretty sure the only ones I ever read had Bugs Bunny or somesuch in them. You'd have to ask my mom. The most memorable part for me was always the Sea Monkeys ads on the back cover, which I wanted and I wanted and then I wanted some more.
So, for me, the word Superman means one thing: Christopher Reeve. Every quirk, every oddity, every deviation from the "traditional" Superman plot (I'm assuming there are some - even though I have no idea what they are) have all become part of the "real" Superman story in my head.
I'll tell you why. I fell in love with Christopher Reeve when I was a teeny little girl (just a mere 7 years old) and that love affair has lasted most of my life. I own the first two Superman movies, and have watched them over and over. I don't care what everyone else says - Christopher Reeve as Superman is the Ultimate Romantic Hero. Shut up. He is so.
As a result, Christopher Reeve's Superman is the standard against which I've measured all other Supermen. Dean Cain's wasn't bad - but it wasn't really Superman to me - it was just watching another superhero story on TV. And Smallville was something I just never got into, although I've heard from others it's quite good.
But I have to admit when I heard that they were making another Superman movie, I had two distinct and instantaneous reactions:
1. Yay! More Superman!
2. No! They could never measure up!
However, I'm nothing if not all about withholding judgement until I see for myself (hey, you, in the back row, stop laughing, I do so withhold judgement - mostly). Which was why I was kind of excited this morning to find Blue Tights, a fan site devoted to the new movie, and more importantly, a gallery of images from the new film.
Doesn't the guy look like the spitting image of Christopher Reeve? My heart turned over when I saw it. Now, I'm not 100% sure about the costume (where's the red, dude?) but I'll wait until I see more of it to decide.
I hope the script is a good one. With Kevin Spacey as Lex and 21st century special effects available, all the flick needs is a good script to potentially become one of my favorite new movies.
June 2006 seems like a looong way away.

Angie, you should read more comic books! You'd love them! Try the current run of The Flash, maybe Green Arrow. If you'd like something a little more indie then try Trigger (its a Vertigo comic).
