its out of beta, so gmail invites are basically useless

Thanks Chris! Actually, according to the Gmail web site (note the logo still has the "beta" tag):

"How do I sign up? When can I get a Gmail account?

We're currently only offering Gmail as part of a preview release and limited test. We don't have details on when Gmail will be made more widely available, as that depends in part on the results of the test."

Another giveaway: there's no way to sign up on the Gmail home page... :)

Methinks Google may never open up gmail to public signups. While it may be thwarted in the future, I think at present, the invite protocol prevents spammers from automating the process of generating spam email accounts.

Available, not available; exciting, boring--I'd still love one of your invites, Angie ;>

Thanks in advance, but mostly, thanks for offering such a great read everyday. :)

I discovered I have 100! Damn!

Anyways, here's a neat utility you might take advantage of:

http://www.viksoe.dk/code/gmail.htm

it's a gmail drive shell extension, basically allows you to use the gmail as another drive.

I too would love an invite. Will make my fellow IT department members jealous maybe!

Your blog is one of a few of the 150 odd or so I flick through each day after work, and there is usually something on here that will make me stop and read.

I think the Gmail frenzy has died down, especially since most other webmail providers have now bumped up email account sizes.

Tomasz and Sam, if you still want them, I have some invites to spare, and none of my friends are interested.

I guess I'll offer up my fifty invites. Email me if you are interested. All I request is a critique of my website, listed in my profile.

I cave. The siren song of gmail is pulling me in... I emailed you. Thanks.

And not to do the dittohead thing, but I do really enjoy your site.

I'd love a gmail account, if only for the storage space..., and to check out the user interface...

If you still have some left, I'd be grateful...

Thanks for the offer to invite people who read your blog to use gmail. I doubt that I will use it as my primary address either, but what the hey; let me check it out. I haven't commented much on your blog, but I enjoy reading it frequently...used to be regularly, but school keeps me a bit busy.

Thanks again,
David
