post kill bill, who knew2004.11.08

I know that Kill Bill came out over a year ago, but I'd never seen it.

Why would I? I hate Quentin Tarantino movies. I hate Uma Thurman with a passion. I can't stand David Carradine either. Not a big fan of the martial arts films. Nor am I a big fan of gory movies. So, really, no reason for me to see it.

But I was bored last week and hey, it was free-on-demand through The Movie Network. So I decided to order it up and watch the first few minutes.

I ended up watching the whole thing. And I still hate Uma Thurman, David Carradine, martial arts and gory movies.

However. The movie really stuck in my head. I ended up quite liking it, though I watched some gorier parts from between my fingers. And for the most part, that was because of the completely awesome soundtrack.

If you haven't seen the movie, I can't even explain the soundtrack to you, and why it's so powerful. Incredible juxtapositions, a wonderful medley of tunes that give the movie an Old Western/Japanese/pop culture feel. Some of the songs are so completely ridiculous when played in context I laughed out loud, and others got me engaged into scenes I would have normally ignored or fast-forwarded through.

My iTunes is now rotating through the entire soundtrack over and over, helping me to choose my favourites. Right now, I'm completely addicted to Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood by Santa Esmeralda, Battle Without Honor or Humanity by Tomoyasu Hotei, Bang Bang by Nancy Sinatra and Lonely Shepherd by Zamfir. But really, it's rare that an entire album is so filled with great stuff that I like every song.

And yet I love every song on the album. Highly recommended.

My beau is bringing over Volume 2 to watch tonight. It feels very strange to be excited about this fact. ;)

Did you know Rza from Wu Tang put the score/soundtrack together? Those are my favorite songs on the soundtrack too. :)

I'm not sure about the movie either but you are right, the soundtrack is amazing. That's one thing most Tarantino movies assure you of.. some decent music.

The soundtrack of number 2 is as good as the first. In fact, the songs sound better out of context than those in the first movie. Always good...

I have similar feelings about Oh Brother Where Art Thou and Natural Born Killers - amazing soundtracks, but poor movies.

Rza does great soundtracks. If you liked KB, check out GhostDog: Way of the Samurai. He did that one too.

I liked Part 2 better than Part 1. It wasn't a gorey.

Like him or not, Tarrantino does as good a job of picking music for a film as any director in the industry today. All of his soundtracks and great.
