spammers beware
posted 2004.05.26
This afternoon, I received a spam right through my mail-to form on Pampered Puppy. It was from some cheezoid company (I love that word - I think it's my new word) who does "web design" and "search engine positioning" - you know the type, 5 pages for $500, all images from clipart CDs, and doorway pages and other underhanded techniques for search engine positioning.
I know this, because I checked out the URL from the spam. I had to know just how bad it was. And it was at least as bad as I expected.
Normally I delete and ignore such spam but I was SO mightily ticked that the idiots actually used my own web form to spam me, that I decided to write back.
1. To ask why the heck he was spamming me
2. To tell him that they really should a) take a look at the damned site they're spamming before they spam them and b) perhaps only approach sites for whom their design services would be a step up.
Oh, I enjoyed writing that.
Three minutes later a guy from the cheezoid company actually calls me (because, of course, I forgot to remove my office line number from my .sig before sending). He gets right to the point: "Let me ask you - if I could guarantee you a better looking web site and a top 10 position in the SEs, would you be interested in something like that?"
When I scraped my jaw off the floor at his sheer cojones, I asked him if he was kidding me.
He assured me he was not.
I asked him how many years of experience the company had in design and search engine marketing. He said two. Yes. Two. Sounded very proud, too.
I couldn't help myself, really. I laughed - really, full belly laughed at him - and said I could wipe the floor with his ass, and when he had eight years under his belt, then he could spam me again. Surprisingly, he didn't want to chat after that!
Too. Funny.

Memo to self: Do not play with Angie :-)
I really enjoyed this, because there are times I could verbally 'bitch-slap' all those stupid companies that spam me.
I've started to get calls directly from the companies, skipping the spam step. I'm tempted to start asking them tough questions I know they can't answer, but instead I just laugh and hang up.
bless you, Angie, for your 8-year-wise cojones.
i get as pissed off with spam as you do (especially the emails worded in a way that I have to open them, 'just in case').
problem is that these guys *do* know how to sell- i was surprised you got a call rather than a form letter, but i suspect the guy does close with a lot of people using his pitch.
until this form of advertising is somehow made illegal or more costly, it's going to continue. lots of spammers out there are actually making decent coin.
Priceless.
I love the one where they offer me top placement on Google or Yahoo & I have them GO TO GOOGLE - look up my keywords....
"Now, Bobby.. See that company at the top??? The Number one position you can guarantee me??? That's Me. Now look at Yahoo... See the top puppy??? You got it.. that's me. You know what Bobby??? I started this game in 1986. I work my ASS off to make this magic happen.. and I have been doing it without YOUR help or anyone elses... NOW I would ask YOU if YOU would like a Number 1 pos. - but you can't afford me. So you just go have a nice day."

Love it!
