metropolis

I've always considered myself to be a sci-fi geek, particularly when it comes to movies. I grew up with some really awful, wonderful sci-fi movies like Dark Star, Logan's Run, Dreamscape, Ice Pirates and Battle Beyond the Stars. If it was available in BetaMax, and in the sci-fi section, my parents rented it.
Of course, we can't forget my addiction to Star Wars and Star Trek and big budget Hollywood flicks over the years.
I even own a book on the subject, though I'll confess I've only flipped through it as a resource.
But how is it that until today I'd never heard of Metropolis? The image of Maria rings a bell, though I never knew what movie it was from.
Suddenly, I feel like I've been living under a rock. How I want to see this movie!
Also, the image of Maria is sufficiently pretty that it would be way too fun to have a Maria statue or lamp for my office.
Mad props to The Cartoonist for the Metropolis and shopping links. And for bringing my sadly neglected sci-fi education to my attention!

Oh, yes, Last Starfighter is still on my list of favourite, awful sci-fi movies. I watch it every time I find it on TV. The Goonies wasn't bad, although not my favourite. I always liked Gremlins more.
Other favourites would have to include V, Buck Rogers (!!), The Black Hole, and Tron. There's a bigger list brewing in my head. Maybe I'll make a followup post at some point.
And I don't find it all that surprising that no complete version exists - after all, the film is very old. As I recall, Murnau's Nosferatu suffered similar problems (lost scenes, etc).
I did, however, add the newly restored DVD with special features to my Amazon wish list. Yum.
You HAVE heard of FarScape, right?
I hear that. I'm a sci-fi nut too. Star Wars, Trek, Farscape, The Abyss, Aliens, etc..
I'm really looking forward to the Farscape mini-series at the end of the year, the battlestar Galactica series and the film The Day After Tomorrow which has a really slick looking web site I might add. Hellboy looks awesome too.

There was also an anime version of the metropolis movie made. I enjoyed it a lot.

Did you ever see The Last Starfighter? I always wanted to—I wasn't allowed to go to movies—but I had the book. Same with The Goonies.
The Metropolis is incredible. But perhaps more incredible, at least in my estimation, is that there is no complete extant version of it. Hang on, wasn't that the 20th century?
