excellent customer service

You know, it's rare to find good customer service. Even rarer to find it in a big company that has had a history of not necessarily being the most customer-friendly, like Register.com. But it's important to give credit when it's due.
This past weekend, I had the opportunity to need customer service from Register.com. Twice.
The first time was due to lack of invoices. I have all of my domains set up to automatically renew through Register.com because it's easy and it keeps me from having to remember the end dates of each of them and check back at expiration time. Most of my domains renewed in the last year, and I saw the charges on my card, checked with the Register.com system to make sure they actually renewed, and didn't think much about it - until tax time, when I needed to gather receipts.
Turns out I didn't have a receipt for any of those renewals, so with a lead heart I picked up the phone to call Register.com. I dialed with my hands-free set, because I just knew it would take for-freaking-ever. Even calling my local cable company for support takes for-freaking-ever. We, as customers, have just become accustomed to waiting forever when we need to do anything other than buy something from a company. And sometimes even then. :)
To my surprise, my wait was less than two minutes before speaking to a CSR. Wow. What's more, she helped me diagnose the problem in short order (an old email address was set up for invoicing, even though I had updated all my email addresses for the domain ages ago), fixed the problem, and re-sent me all the invoices for the past year.
She even laughed and was pleasant. Really. I'm not kidding here!
The following day, I realized that I still hadn't switched the DNS servers for a new domain I'd purchased recently to my hosting company. Turns out that despite what their FAQ says, you can't update DNS server information for a .co.uk domain online; you have to make an email request to Register.com, and they deal with it manually.
I sent off the emailed request late that night, fully expecting 24-48 hours before I heard back.
The next morning I woke up, and a response was sitting in my inbox, asking for a confirmation before acting. I duly confirmed, and less than an hour later received notice that my DNS information had been updated.
What's more, I received one last email from Register.com thanking me for my patience with the manual .co.uk process. The email included a discount code for $10 off a new domain.
Honestly, I'm impressed. I don't know if this is always the level of service they provide, but my experience was extremely pleasant. Two thumbs up for customer service.
And I don't say that very often!
