could spam be useful?
posted 2003.12.10

Spam is always nonsensical, always annoying, yadda yadda yadda. You've all heard it - and ranted it - before.

Recently, there has been an upswing in a new method of spam - yet another tactic in a long line of tactics designed to get around the spam filters.

This technique involves appending a random word - culled from a wordnet or random dictionary, one would assume - to the end of the subject line.

For example, here are a few subject lines from recent days (edited, emphasis added):

GET A BIGGER C***, MAKE HER SCREAM diorama
MAKE HER GET ON HER KNEES AND BEG YOU FOR IT. peripheral
GET A BIGGER C***, MAKE HER SCREAM bidiagonal
Valium for sale, no prior prescription needed rickety
Stop Spam deallocate
BE A SEX MACHINE. GET A BIGGER D*** quintet
Buy Vicodin online today broody

But I say, if you're going to send the dictionary-enhanced spam anyway, why not make it useful? How much harder would it be to attach the dictionary definition for each word?

Think about it. Spam as an educational tool. Since the whole world now gets more spam than real mail, this could really make a difference! Like a brand new twist on the concept of word-of-the-day.
