Went with a girlfriend tonight to finally find out what happens to Neo, Trinity and the gang.
Like the other two movies, I need some time to process before I can really discuss it sensibly (and I have no desire to spoil it for those of you who haven't seen it yet). Still, I wanted to say a few things about it in light of the bad rap it's been getting in various blogs and sites I frequent.
I think it was amazing. There was at least an entire hour of the movie where I don't think I took a single breath, I was that on edge. It was a fury of action that kept me literally gripping the arms of my chair. I was high on adrenaline when we left the theater, and it took a while to come down.
If their special effects and computer people don't win a slew of awards for their work, then I'll be greatly surprised. In terms of visual effects, I think it's the most impressive movie I've ever seen.
Sure, it wasn't perfect - there were little bits that stuck in my mind and suspended my suspension of disbelief. But there are those moments in each of the three films, to my way of thinking. The series is more than the sum of its parts.
If you enjoyed the first movie and were disappointed by the second (as I was when I first saw it - I enjoy it more each time I watch it, but it didn't equal the first) I think you'll enjoy the third movie.
As I sit and process the film in my mind, one question keeps coming to the fore (like a little girl tucked in the bedsheets and clutching her daddy's arm breathlessly as he tells her a story):
And then what happened?
Which, I imagine, the W. brothers had in mind all along. :)
Update: A wonderful quote lifted from the incredibly long thread already running on Kottke's site (which contains a lot of spoilers, so be warned). It's also 1500+ comments and growing, so you may not get anything else done this weekend if you start reading it!
