A fascinating treatise on Copyright featured on First Monday states:
For the past several hundred years, publishers have promoted a simplistic view of copyright. Copyright is a matter of fairness to authors, they argue. Authors own their creations and therefore should be free to control them. But the history of copyright and its underlying philosophy contradicts that simple view. Copyright is not about fairness to authors; copyright is about balancing interests, including the interest of the public.
A-men.
Chip Simons has some extraordinary photographs to his credit. I'm particularly fascinated by his bunnies series. How I would love a print of one of these!
From the world of marketing comes Memory Morphing:
A group of US marketing researchers claim that brand owners can make their customers believe they had a better experience of a product or service than they really did by bombarding them with positive messages after the event. Advocates of the technique, known as "memory morphing", claim it can be used to improve customers' perceptions of products and encourage them to repeat their purchases and recommend brands to friends.
I can't tell whether to be appalled or amazed. (via kottke)
In honor of the upcoming holiday, I have two Halloween-y links to share...
Ghost Droppings is a very cool Halloween blog. If it's happening in the Halloween world, this site will let you know about it.
Fright Catalog is commercial but has lots of fun Halloween-y stuff.
As an aside, what's the deal with all the Halloween sites using green these days? What happened to good old orange and black? What, too traditional? Or blood red? Still too traditional?
