running your own business

The dot-com boom is over, but many still have dreams of funding their dream companies. If you're one of the many, this guide to an executive summary makes some good points. (via Corante)
Home is where the start up is: An interesting personal story of a start-up. Particularly interesting to me because they're a dog product company. Starting your own business is not for the faint of heart.
Actually, if you have an entrprenurial bent, the entire Entreworld web site is an interesting read.
Even better is Entrepreneur.com. They've got some great ideas in their Microfinancing area, for those unwilling or not ready to get big-scale funding.
I also feel the need to mention (again) the excellent Harvard Business School Working Knowledge online magazine.
This is the thing. I know a lot of tech people who have a dream of running their own business who would find the links above yawn-y at best. But business is the thing. It's always been the thing. It's not just about the technology or infrastructure or design or marketing. It's about running the business, knowing how to do it well, learning from others in the business world. If thinking about the stuff above doesn't excite you, odds are you will be bored stiff running a business—and if you're the person supposed to be running it, your company is in real trouble. A lesson too many forgot during the boom. And since.
