digital music

I'll confess to being a relative ignoramus when it comes to hot new music. I know what I like and I like what I know, which generally means my playlist is filled with everything from old school Madonna to Barbra Streisand to Morcheeba to Eminem to the soundtrack to Chicago. But as I don't often listen to the radio or hang out in clubs, I'm generally woefully ignorant of “hip new music” and artists until they are already so popular that everyone's heard of them.

Which is why, of course, I'm just becoming aware of the music used in TV commercials, thanks in large part to the two Business 2.0 articles I read today:

For Sale: Moby (and every other hip recording artist on the planet)
Commercials that Rock

It piqued my curiousity enough so that I needed to go to Amazon and sample some of these songs. Would I even like them?

Turns out, yes, very much! Some of my favourites are by groups that I haven't even heard of until today, such as Télépopmusik, Delerium, Orb, and Mr. Scruff.

Which of course in turn led me to find out if anyone had bother to catalogue all these songs being used in TV commercials. Which led, in turn, to finding this site: Songtitle.Info—Music from TV Commercials. Nicely done site with a lot of information to share.

These songs would make a great compilation CD - or several of them. Is anyone out there listening?

Now, if only we could get the music industry's ass in gear, I could actually just make my own—completely legal—compilation CD from tracks downloaded online. Paid for by track, thank you very much, and irrespective of label.
