idiots and back in the day

Marc Hedlund rages (and rightly so): “Yahoo, you IDIOTS! WHAT are you thinking!? If you use birthdate as a means of password recovery, why would you put that information right on a user's home page? If it's supposed to be a shared secret, don't you think you ought to keep it secret?!”
My personal idiot highlight of the week is the latest Supreme Court ruling about copyright: “The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld lengthier copyrights protecting the profits of songs, books and cartoon characters - a huge victory for Disney and other companies.” (via Dan Gillmor)
Why do we reward companies instead of individuals? Why, for that matter, can no one on the Supreme Court see the incredible irony in heavy lobbying by companies to extend a right that was supposed to protect individuals?
You guys wouldn't last five minutes back in 1984: “Now that I've reached the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today. You've got it so fuckin' easy! [When I was a kid], there was no email! We had to actually write somebody a letter—with a pen—and then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the fuckin' mailbox and it would take like a week to get there!”
Absolutely wonderful little gem. Odds are you'll need to be close to thirty to really appreciate its ironies, but a wonderful little gem nevertheless.
