Visio and first principles2002.09.16

Do you use Visio for in your interaction design? I've found it's invaluable for wireframing and rapid prototyping, as well as for the inevitable flowcharts. If you don't already use Visio for rapid interface prototyping, think about trying it. And whether you've used it before or not, stop in and read Visio - the interaction designer's nail gun. Good stuff here, and downloadable goodies as well.

That's not to say it's the only tool. When dealing with more visual people I find Photoshop works well for prototypes. Particularly since version 6 came out with layer sets. You can do some great things with them. Pampered Puppy's latest design was prototyped completely in Photoshop. Flexibility can be a good thing.

Since we're about to jump headlong into a redesign at work, I also find myself referencing Tog's First Principles often. Really good, basic, easy-to-forget, worth-reminding stuff here.

Before we leave the subject completely, I want to reiterate how great Guuui.com is. If you haven't before, do check it out. Yum.

The Zen of Palm and Why It Backfires: While I don't completely agree that Palm is on the losing side — yet — I do agree that it does have some serious competition, and must be very smart.

Exciting purchase on the schedule for tomorrow; I plan to pop into FutureShop and pick up an HP Scanjet 3570C Flatbed Scanner. It can do transparencies and negs as well as regular flatbed things. Now that I'm spiralling headlong into photography and geneaology, it seemed the best time to pick up a new scanner. My ancient UMAX has been broken for months.

Wayne Newton and Zeldman. There's a phrase I never thought I'd write. Mind you, I never thought I'd ever see a web geek, one of “us”, headlining in Vegas either. Cool.
