NPR actually responds to a wake-up call: Just goes to show that even the most backwards-thinking companies can get it with the right education. Their revised linking policy isn't perfect, but it's much closer; more importantly, the company shows that they're willing to listen and learn. Big steps in the right direction. Kudos to them. Not often that I run across two interesting online communities in a single day. Edward Tufte has one that should be fascinating to read and hopefully contribute to as well. As well, a public forum on DMOZ is a great way to help increase the grassroots viability of this very popular directory.

Odds are, you know at least one company that still keeps a lot of its important data in ancient tools like Excel. Ugh. Now they can convert this data to XML and begin the revolution with this very inexpensive tool: XML Converter.
Another interesting software alert for those interested in charging subscription fees for their online content: Member Gate. Looks pretty full-featured at first glance. Never fear though: angiemckaig.com will always be free. :)

Finally, I have a secret to share. I'm hopelessly addicted to disaster movies. Armageddon, Deep Impact, Volcano, I'm right there with you baby. Yeah, I know they're 100% Hollywood schlock but I happen to like pure and unadulterated Hollywood schlock. Anyway, could it really happen? Scientists are monitoring and they'll get back to us.
