post An interesting take on broadband2002.02.27

An interesting take on broadband and its uses here: The Web Is For Serving, Not Surfing. It was always frustrating for me to realize I had a great high-speed connection and no way to actually serve web sites from my home (how convenient would that be!) without violating my terms of service.

Ran across an excellent interview with Steve Krug (author of Don't Make Me Think!, what I consider to be the only must-read book on usability for web makers); you can also listen to a 33 minute version of the interview. On the topic of usability, while this is mostly a fluff piece with some sensationalism thrown in for good measure, I do find it highlights points that we as web makers cannot forget:

  • web users have a finite amount of patience
  • ours is very possibly not the first site they've seen today with slow response times or difficult navigation
  • if we annoy them, they will not come back
