jaded browser user
posted 2000.07.13

Remember the days when browsers were actually exciting to upgrade? When just the simple act of setting aside two hours to download, a half-hour to install and another half-hour to get your internet connection working again was cause for pride?

"Yep," you'd tell your friends, "I upgraded to Netscape 1.2b1 last night." And they'd be impressed. They'd run home and try to catch up, usually buggering up Trumpet Winsock along the way.

I say all this because I downloaded and installed the new Internet Explorer 5.5 today, and it was as much of a non-event as I've ever had. So it hooks up to Alexa. Yippee. It's got a print preview. About time - Netscape's had it for years. And of course a few behind-the-scenes goodies that are only really meaningful if you're a CSS or DHTML geek.

Am I jaded? Have I been around the web for long enough that it take one HELL of a bell and whistle to impress me, or are browsers just not as fun to play with anymore?
